2026 Tax Planning Insights: KCMO Business License

The KCMO Business License (known as Form RD-105) is a mandatory, annual filing for most businesses operating in Kansas City, Missouri. The purpose of this filing is for licensing, ensuring compliance, and to establish tax accounts. It is required for all businesses operating in Kansas City, Missouri regardless of size or type of business (ex: corporations, partnerships, sole proprietors, and associations). There are some exceptions such as state-licensed professionals (ex: Doctors, Attorneys). Hotels and Restaurants are also not required to file as they require a Convention and Tourism Certificate instead.

The deadline for completing such filings is March 1st, while the due date for renewals is the last day in February. New businesses are required to file within 60 days of starting operations. All licenses are valid until December 31st of each year. A late filing penalty will be applied on March 1st of the current year. This is a 5% penalty with an additional 5% for each month the return is not filed (max penalty: 25%). The cost is based on the business’s prior year gross receipts. All business license filings must be submitted through Quick Tax - KCMO Business License or in person at City Hall
