As Kansas City Strength & Conditioning (KCSC) approaches its second anniversary, owners John Renzi and Matt Hinkley are finding that the same approach that has made KCSC the go-to training facility for premier baseball and softball players in the area can be used to help other athletes and adults looking to improve performance and fitness.
As John Renzi and Matt Hinkley got to know each other while working with mutual clients, they quickly discovered that their similar philosophies and baseball backgrounds were a perfect match for a partnership that would allow them to offer the highest quality of sports, fitness, and wellness training in the Kansas City area. John and Matt founded Kansas City Strength and Conditioning (KCSC) in July of 2016 with a goal of providing responsible training and education to improve athletic performance and personal wellness through exercise, nutrition, and proper recovery methods. KCSC quickly became the go-to training facility for premier high school baseball and softball athletes in the area due to its individualized training plans and comprehensive focus on strength, agility, flexibility, nutrition, and injury prevention. As the company approaches its two-year anniversary, John and Matt are finding that the same approach that has helped numerous young men and women secure Division I scholarships and professional sports contracts can be used to help adults who are looking to improve their level of fitness and/or recover from injuries.
While John and Matt share consistent beliefs regarding athletic training, their different experiences outside of KCSC have allowed them to bring unique ideas to the business. For John, leveraging his sales experience to understand the importance of proactive communication, reliability, and responsiveness has contributed to KCSC's loyal following. Matt was able to draw on his internship experience at Cressey Sports Performance in Jupiter, Florida to bring cutting edge training methods to the business. Together they have created a model that offers individualized training in a small group setting. With this model, there are between six to twelve athletes training at one time. This allows for a team environment, individualized workout plans, lower cost for the client, and the opportunity to work with actual teams.
"It's about filling all of the buckets... strength, agility, flexibility, and nutrition. We follow a consistent model and approach, but we are able to create individual plans for all clients based on their situation." - Matt Hinkley, Co-Founder
When a prospective client first walks into the facility, they should expect an initial screening and evaluation that helps both John and Matt assess where that client stands. This includes evaluations of range of motion, flexibility, mobility, and functional movement. They then complete an interview process where the client's goals are discussed, confirmed, and agreed upon. From there, an individualized training plan is developed that addresses the athlete's needs and goals. While implementing the plan, the small group setting allows John and Matt to monitor, measure, and adjust as necessary. The initial screening and evaluation is $50, and the monthly fee for training depends of the frequency of sessions in each customized plan (typically 2 - 5 sessions per week). There is no commitment or minimum contract required to get started.
In just two years, John and Matt have been able to celebrate numerous college signings and professional contracts. Matt feels that the Division II and III signings are as rewarding as the Division I signings their clients achieve saying, "School signings are large accomplishments for us. We celebrate the small schools as much as the large schools. Helping an athlete go from a D-III offer to to D-II or D-I offer is a great feeling." Additional accomplishments include being selected to implement and manage the strength and conditioning program for Baker University Baseball, and witnessing one of their clients go from a 30th round draft pick to a top prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization.
"I got into this to train, educate, and help people with fitness and wellness as a lifelong goal for my clients. I want our clients to be able to live a healthier life during and after working with us." - John Renzi, Co-Founder
While their niche has been in the baseball and softball market, KCSC has expanded its specialization into additional sports and serving more than just athletes. They have recently been able to help adult clients looking to reach their lifelong goal of staying active and healthy. John recalls several examples when considering some KCSC's largest accomplishments. One involves working with a breast cancer survivor who was wanting to get her strength and fitness back. Another was watching one of their clients score 25 points in her first game back for Washburn University Basketball after suffering a significant injury in the prior season.
In the long-run, John and Matt hope to grow their staff by hiring professionals to provide a more consistent training experience rather than adopting to industry norm of bringing on independent contractors. They are confident that the model they have developed can be used to help more people achieve their highest level of fitness and wellness, no matter the sport or age of the client.
